What is a CMR consignment note?
CMR is the international consignment note used for the carriage of goods by road between countries. Its form is based on the CMR Convention of 1956, and the document confirms the contract of carriage, the handover of goods to the carrier and their condition at loading.
A CMR consignment note is issued in at least three originals: for the sender, for the consignee (travels with the goods) and for the carrier. Each copy is signed by the sender and the carrier, and by the consignee on delivery.
The CMR form has 24 boxes. The most important ones are: sender (box 1), consignee (box 2), place of delivery (box 3), place and date of taking over the goods (box 4), description of goods, number of packages, packaging and weight (boxes 6–11), carrier (box 16) and the parties' signatures and stamps (boxes 22–24).
